Hans Memling painted the Ursula Shrine in Bruges around 1489 — a reliquary chest depicting the legendary martyrdom of Saint Ursula and her companions in Cologne. This plate captures the moment of their landing on the Rhine, rendered in Memling’s characteristic luminous detail — jewelled robes, golden light on water, the spires of medieval Cologne rising behind.
This original plate was printed in Leipzig in 1961 by VEB E.A. Seemann for the Hungarian Fine Arts Fund edition of Századok Festészete. It travelled from East Germany to Southeast Asia, survived hidden in Saigon through decades of turmoil, and was recovered as part of this collection.
